The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, established in 1945 and based in The Hague, Netherlands. The ICJ settles legal disputes between states and gives advisory opinions on international legal issues referred to it by the United Nations General Assembly, Security Council, or other UN organs and specialized agencies. The Court is composed of 15 judges elected to nine-year terms by the UN General Assembly and Security Council. The ICJ plays a critical role in the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the development of international law.
