The International Criminal Court (ICC) is an independent, permanent court established by the Rome Statute in 2002, located in The Hague, Netherlands. The ICC is tasked with prosecuting individuals for the most serious offenses of international concern, including genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. Unlike the International Court of Justice, which addresses disputes between states, the ICC focuses on holding individuals accountable for egregious violations of international law. The Court’s jurisdiction is complementary to national criminal jurisdictions, stepping in only when countries are unwilling or unable to prosecute criminals themselves.
